A Monthly Gift Of Medical Advice From Aberdeen

Professor Orlando Meyers, who recently retired to Aberdeen, has agreed to write a monthly article with an explanation of diseases which affect both young and old. These articles will be written alternatively in both English and Afrikaans, the first being an article on Gout.
Professor Meyers graduated in medicine from U.C.T. in 1958. He then worked as a House Physician at Groote Schuur Hospital in the Cape for a year after which time he then studied for one year with Professor Gelfard in Harare. Professor Meyers then returned to U.C.T. where he studied and completed his Specialist Degree in Rheumatology in 1965. Shortly after completing his degree, Professor Meyers worked in London doing research and in Boston U.S.A. at the Robert Brigham Hospital which is dedicated to the treatment of arthritis.
In 1967 Professor Meyers returned to South Africa and was appointed Junior Physician in the Department of Medicine at Groote Schuur Hospital where he worked from 1967 – 1996.
In 1997 Professor Meyers became the first Professor of Rheumatology in South Africa.
Professor Meyers then retired to George in the Cape where he set up a private practice for about 10 years. Professor Meyers has lectured outside South Africa and is the recipient of an Honorary Professorship from Skopje in Macedonia.
Professor Meyers is hoping to contribute to the Aberdeen community by being on the Board of the Aberdeen Hospital and, should time allow, he may start a consulting practice in Aberdeen. We are extremely grateful to Professor Meyers for his willingness to contribute a monthly article from which there will be much benefit to the community and we wish him much happiness in his retirement to Aberdeen.
